Could it really be possible to build a robot with its own thoughts and emotions? What would this mean for the human race as we know it? Robots will come to dominate people's lives in the future - just not in the way we think... We are constantly developing more and more sophisticated technology; the robot Sojourner explored the surface of Mars, and the prototype Kismet can learn to talk, recognize faces and socialize just like a child. But, says Brooks, these automata will not take over the world. Instead the distinction between humans and robots will eventually disappear as we merge with intelligent machinery - in fact, in an age of artificial implants and genetic engineering, this is already starting to happen.
